Health and Safety Specialist

Reporting to the Asset Protection Director, responsibilities for the position include the following, but are not limited to:

Health and Safety program development, implementation, support and mentoring
• Analyze programs, processes and practices, documents, reporting, to identify gaps, develop resolutions, assign corrective actions, and follow up on progress and outcomes.
• Provide advisory leadership in development of health and safety strategy, goals, standards, policies, programs, reporting and tools.
• Act as first point of contact regarding all health and safety matters and guide, coach and mentor on the implementation and continuous improvement of safety procedures and operational procedures, leading to establishing a safety culture and ensuring regulatory compliance
• Engages employees in the implementation of operational procedures (including development of hazard assessments, job hazard analysis, safe work procedures and on-the-job training checklists).
• Monitor the information for all required inspections, incidents and events.
• Develop and consistently apply reasonable health and safety standards across Saskatoon Co-op to improve health and safety performance
• Demonstrates a proactive commitment to safety through actions, discussions, decisions, risk management, and other opportunities on a daily basis. Promotes the same expectation for safety throughout Saskatoon Co-op through formal activities (attend different OH&S Committee Meetings, safety meetings, toolbox meetings, division meetings, and daily behaviors).
• Contributes to interdependent strategy, programs and processes ie. Asset Protection, CRS programs etc.

Health and Safety Training
• Identifies Health and Safety training requirements, prepares training materials
• Supports Team Leaders in their identification of training gaps, and provides recommendations along with communicating those recommendations with other stakeholders (Ex: Organizational Leaders or Human Resources)
• Ensures quality and timely delivery of required safety training, in accordance with internal and external standards, Saskatoon Co-op policies regulatory requirements, and other safety related changes.
• Develops training requirements for all Saskatoon Co-op positions to meet regulatory requirements.
• Ensures management team is aware of regulatory requirements, develops necessary documentation in order to inform contractors and tenants of their responsibilities in meeting the regulatory requirements.

Workplace Inspections
• Completes thorough, accurate, and regular workplace safety inspections
• Communicates and reports on the results of the safety inspections for corrective action application
• Follows up and ensure that corrective measures are completed in an effective and timely manner.
• Leads the analysis (job demands analysis, hazard assessment) of work conditions, make recommendations to the Store and Division Managers
• Participates in Preferred Methods Observations, observing the process through a safety lens to identify unsafe conditions or acts, provide feedback to the employee and supervisors, and make reasonable recommendations for correcting actions

Incident Investigations & Corrective Action
• Ensure thorough, accurate, and timely completion of incident investigations relating to employees, customers, or contractors.
• Provide advice to Team Leaders on conducting an incident investigation, or to lead the incident investigation process for more complex or sensitive situations.
• Identify, and assist Team Leaders in identifying, root cause and support Team Leaders in applying suitable corrective actions for all safety incident investigations.
• Monitor incident reports and refusals to work in a timely manner, and validate the effectiveness of the applied correcting actions.

Relationship Management
• Establish and foster effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders is critical to success in this role as some of the safety operational work is either carried out through other stakeholders, or information from others is necessary for the Health and Safety Specialist to be successful.

Audits
• Supports internal and external (WCB) audits
• Provides recommendations for improvement to meet or exceed standards and regulatory requirements.
• Establishes analytics and prepares reports as required
• Makes reasonable recommendations for improvements to safety procedures based on changes to regulatory requirements or industry best practices
• Regularly maintain and audit the Association’s list of external contractors to ensure there is appropriate coverage, safety sign-offs, and ensuring all contractors are following the appropriate safety requirements for the organization

Reporting
• Completes analytics and reports on safety KPIs and KPMs on a monthly basis
• Analyzes data, identifies trends, predicts future risk
• Collaboratively develops action plans to mitigate risk

Qualifications:
• Post-Secondary certificate, diploma or degree in a safety or training specialization.
• 5+ Years’ experience in a health and safety ore retail related role with demonstrated progressive increase in responsibility.
• CRSP or CHSC are considered an asset
