Special Education Resource Teacher
Position: Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT)
Department: Education
Classification/Level QECO, M’Chigeeng First Nation Teacher Grid
Employment Status: Term Regular Full-Time
Position Summary
The Special Education Resource Teacher works which students who have a wide range of special needs and challenges. The SERT will create and apply appropriate curriculum and assign activities that are specific to students’ abilities and needs. The SERT teacher is involved in each student academic, social, and behavioral development Maintaining/ reporting student achievement, ensuring IEP’s and I PRC are followed, student files are maintained and up to date, contribute to a positive school culture, incorporating trauma inform practice, Active in ensuring student success. Equality diversity inclusion (EDI) practiced and reflected in the school environment. This position is subject to M’Chigeeng First Nation personnel and administrative policies, relevant education department program policies and procedures, and relevant laws and regulations. Other duties and responsibilities related to the position i.e., online programming.
Reporting Relationship
The Teacher reports directly to the school principal.
Essential Functions
In addition to the responsibilities of a teacher as outlined in the Education Act and regulations, the Special Education teacher will:
• Be familiar with and follow all relevant legislation and polices with respect to Special Education.
• Assist with developing individual learning goals for the student and modify to the student’s abilities and needs.
• Organize IPRC meetings with the school principal, teachers, parents and any other school or community resource members who should attend.
• Assist in the identification of students with special needs.
• Provide assistance in the development of students’ Individual Education Plans to teachers and parents.
• Review IEPs with the child’s parents, general education teachers, and school administrators.
• Complete IEP section allocated to the Special Education teacher.
• Provide appropriate programming for identified students such as in class assistance, withdrawal, and individual monitoring.
• Assist staff with strategies for effective instruction for identified students.
• Coordinate referrals to community Health and other agencies to assist with identification, programming, and any other student needs.
• Organize a monthly calendar of community resource personnel who provide direct programming to students.
• Work closely with parents to keep them updated on progress and make recommendations to promote learning in the home.
• Ensure IPRC’s. IEP’s and student reporting/programming are reviewed in accordance with all required timelines.
• Communicating and coordinating with others involved in the child’s well-being, including parents, social workers, school psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, school administrators, and other teachers;
• Evaluate the progress of students and discuss results with students, parents, and school officials.
• Participate in staff meetings, teacher training workshops, professional development, and language development.
• Maintain a high level of security and confidentiality.
• Maintain a collaborative working relationship with the school principal, teaching colleagues and administrative staff.
• Adhere to M’Chigeeng First Nation Personnel Policies.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
Preferred
Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Bachelor of Education, Program of Teacher Education, Special Education Specialist, Reading Specialist, other Additional Qualifications, Teaching experience.
Minimum
Valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate and Undergraduate Degree Must be working to attain Bachelor of Education Degree and obtain additional qualifications.
Have knowledge and/or experience with the culture, tradition, history, and customs of the Anishinaabe
Understanding and fluency of Ojibwe is an asset or must be willing to learn the language.
CRC/VSS must be current thirty (30) days, original or certified copy
Other
Patience, understanding and dedicated to giving each individual student the tools and guidance needed to help them maximize success.
Provide original or certified copy of a Police Vulnerable Sector Screening documents.
Ability to make decisions and work on own initiatives supportive to the school environment.
Understanding and fluency of Ojibwe is an asset or must be willing to learn the language.
CRC/VSS Rational
CRC/VSS must be current thirty (30) days, original or certified copy. All employment applicants for MFN Education programs are required to submit a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as individuals will work directly/indirectly with students. All individuals employed under the education program must have a record clear of charges and convictions relating to child sexual harassment or abuse of any kind.
